読者の皆様から多く頂いていた英語の勉強方法を教えてほしいといったリクエスト。
この記事は2015年に書いた創刊号に書いたコラムの内容を元に記事を書きました。
僕がロンドンに留学した時に感じたのは「日本人は英語の読み書きができるのに話すことができない。 他国の方々は読み書きはできないがとにかく話す」ということだ。日本人にはできないことに対しての羞恥があり、完璧主義だからである。逆にヨーロッパや南米の方々は文法は滅茶苦茶であろう が、とにかく意思疎通をとって楽しみたいと思う人が多く伺われる。一ヶ月、半年、一年が経ったあとに、 どちらが英語が上達しているのか... それは確実に後者である。そのことを感じた僕が英語が話せるようになりたいあなたのために、実践した英語学習術を教えましょう。
What I thought when I was in London for study was “Japanese people can read and write English but can’t speak English. Other foreigners on the other hand can’t read or write English but they try to speak English anyway”. Japanese people hesitate to do something that they can’t do perfectly because a lot of them seem to be perfectionists. But people from Europe and South America who I met, tend to enjoy having conversations in English whether their English is good or bad. Which way of study works more in a month, six months, a year’s time... It's obviously the latter one. So, I’d like to give you some ways of “How to study English”based on my experiences.
Watching the movie
まずは好きな映画の DVD を一本買ってみましょう。ここで重要なのは「何回見ても面白いか、そして 登場人物との年齢や境遇の近さ」がポイント。
1 回目 音声英語・日本語字幕 ストーリーを理解する
2 回目 音声字幕 両方とも英語 話している会話の文章を覚える
3 回目 音声英語・字幕なし 英語が理解できてるかも！？と思うはず。
これらを実践してみると驚くほど英語が身につきます。ただ、今そんなに見る時間ないよと思った方もいるはず。「安心してください、ちゃんと別の方法も考えていますよ ( 笑 )」見る時間がない方は自分の 好きなシーンを何度も見て、セリフを覚えてみましょう！
Let’s buy your favourite film’s DVD first. The important thing here is that the it is “very interesting for you, also the situation of the movie, the character’s age and the general situation is similar to yours”.
1st : Watch it in English with Japanese subtitles so that you can understand the story.
2nd: Watch it in English with English subtitles so that you can memorise some of the lines.
3rd: Watch it in English with no subtitles, you will be surprised how much you can understand what they're talking about.

MUSIC
みなさん、好きな洋楽ってあるよね? 音楽を音だけで楽しむことは悪いことだとは思いませんが、歌詞を理解して聞けばもっと音楽を楽しめて、感動することもあります。
まずは好きなアーティストの音楽を歌詞を見ながら聞いてみましょう。
そして、歌詞を覚えたら次にカラオケに行って歌ってみましょう。
音楽で英語を覚えれば発音も良くなるし、何より音楽がどんどん好きになって心の底から楽しめるようになります。実は音楽で英語を聞き取れるようになれば、日常会話はもっと簡単に聞き取れるようにもなり、歌のリズムを掴めば自然と発音も良くなります。その二つを実践すればだんだんと自然に歌詞がでてくるようになり、口ずさんだりするようになってきます。
You like some English music, don’t you? It'’s nice to enjoy music as a sound, but I think you’ll enjoy it more if you understand the lyrics.
First of all, let’s listen to the music whilst reading through the lyrics.
Second of all, let’s go to karaoke when you think you memorize the lyrics.
If you can understand what they are singing about in the song, you must be able to understand English conversations easily! And if you do these two, you’ll be singing the song naturally without looking at the words. Your pronunciation will be a lot better and you’ll definitely love and enjoy music more.
BOOK
海外の雑誌が好きなあなた「うわーこの写真かわいい」と思うだけでは非常に勿体無い。文 書 ( 注釈 ) を理解してこそ外見 ( 写真 ) の美しさや魅力もきっとわかるはず。文書を読みながらわからない単語があれば、すぐに辞書で調べて単語の上に意味を書く。雑誌に直接書くのが嫌であればメモ帳などでもいいと思います！本は文法を学ぶのに一番良い方法。
English magazine lovers! Don't waste your time if you’re just looking at pages thinking “OMG this picture is so cute!”. You'll enjoy them more if you understand what is written next to the pictures. If you find some words that you don’t know, look them up in your dictionary and write down their meanings just above the words. If you don’t want to write anything in magazines, then you can write them down in a notepad instead. Books are the best for learning grammar.

INTERVIEW
僕はYouTubeで英語が話せる日本人のインタビュー動画を全て見ました。日本人の英会話は文法や発音も比較的理解しやすいので、初級編としてはオススメです。だんだん慣れてきたら好きな海外アーティストのインタビューやバラエティー番組を見てみましょう。字幕がついている動画をおすすめします。
I watched all the interview videos by Japanese people who can speak English on YouTube. Japanese- English is easier to understand than proper English if you are a beginner English learner because the accent sounds familiar to you. Once you’ve gotten used to English, let’s start watching interview videos by your favourite English artists and some TV shows!

PRACTICAL
1 から 4 はあくまで一人の学習法。一番の語学習得への近道は人とコミュニケーションを取ること。周りにいる外国人の友達や知人、そしてこれから新たな出会いがあれば積極的に声をかけてみましょう。実践してこそ自分のできることやできないことがわかります。人に声をかけることが緊張する、相手の様子を伺い怖くて声がかけれないという方も勇気を持とう！声をかけられることに対して嫌な顔をする人はあまり多くはないはず。自分が外国で生活していたら声をかけられるのは嬉しいでしょ。みなさんも言葉の壁を越えて世界を広げましょう ！
The steps I’ve just introduced above are for learning by yourself. The best way to study foreign languages is to communicate with actual people. Let’s talk to your foreign friends, some foreigners you know; and if you meet someone new, don’t be shy to talk to them, otherwise you wouldn’t find out what you can do or can’t do with your English. If you’re one of these people who get nervous, worried and scared to talk to new people, don’t worry! Because who would be offended to be talked to by friendly strangers like you?! It would be nice to be talked to by someone friendly in a foreign country, wouldn’t it? So, let’s overcome the language barrier together and see the world!
SUMMARY
これはあくまで僕の英語の勉強方なのでみなさんに合うかはわかりませんが、英語は楽しんで学ぶことが一 番大切。東京は世界からも注目を浴びている大都市。日本人は親切な「おもてなし」 の心を持っていますが、語学の面では他国に比べて圧倒的に劣っているのも事実。2020年に東京オリンピックは延期となってしまいましたが、未来のために読者の皆様も英語を通して、ホスピタリティー ( おもてなし ) を高めていけば、日本はさらに多くの人に愛される国になるでしょう。
These are only my recommendations, so you mightn’t find them that good after all, but I think the most important thing for learning English is to enjoy learning English. Tokyo is one of the cities with huge global attention. Though we have the “Omotenashi” spirit in us, our English skills aren’t as good as other countries. Unfortunately Tokyo Olympics have been postponed, but we hope to make Japan a country which more people will fall in love with, we all will have to use our hospitality (Omotenashi spirit) through English!
